Pastor Bill Elder turned 101 this month—and he's finally letting himself slow down. Not by choice, mind you. A recent hip fracture forced him to decline surgery; at his age, the risks outweigh the benefits. So he's taken things easier. Mostly.
"You lose a lot of your freedom," he said.
But for Elder, the work of serving God never stops. Just days after breaking his hip, he led an inspiring service at his church. "I'm going to take a few minutes to talk about eternity," he told his congregation. "I want to show you that 100 years really isn't that insignificant." He celebrated his 101st birthday surrounded by family and friends.
From Kansas to California: A Life in Motion
Elder was born on a farm in Salinas, Kansas. His education was cut short by the Great Depression in 1929. He became a minister, and as the world transformed—through World War II, the civil rights movement, the rise of the Beatles—Elder moved across America to continue his calling.
He tried retiring in the 1980s. Instead, he wrote two books. At 97, he published God Is Exceedingly Great, a direct response to Christopher Hitchens' controversial God Is Not Great.
For the past few years, Elder and his wife Mary—married 74 years—have lived at Linda Valley Villas, a 98-unit senior community with comprehensive support services. The average age of residents there is 87 years old. That's eight years above the US life expectancy.
But Elder's age and vitality are hardly unique in his community.
