Here is how this technology works. In nature, electromagnetic waves span a massive range, but our human eyes can only see a very small slice of it, which we call "visible light". Just beyond the red end of the visible spectrum is near-infrared (NIR) light, which has wavelengths between 800 and 1,600 nanometers.

To capture this invisible light, the scientists imbued standard, flexible contact lens polymers with highly specialized nanoparticles made of gold and rare earth metals like erbium and ytterbium. These tiny nanoparticles act like microscopic translators.

They do not require any external batteries or power sources. Instead, they absorb the invisible near-infrared light and energize it, pushing it into shorter wavelengths (between 400 and 700 nanometers) that the human retina can actually process and see.

The researchers proved this works by testing the lenses on both mice and humans. When mice wearing the lenses were placed in a maze, they actively avoided boxes illuminated only by invisible infrared light, proving they could suddenly see it. When humans wore the lenses, they were able to recognize patterns and even decode flashing Morse code signals that were being transmitted through completely invisible infrared lasers!

The Catch: Why It Works Best When Your Eyes Are Closed

While having night-vision contact lenses sounds like a superhero gadget, there are a few interesting quirks and limitations to this brand-new technology.

First, there is a very bizarre catch: these contact lenses actually work much better when your eyes are completely closed.

How is it possible to see with your eyes shut? It all comes down to how light passes through our bodies. While normal, everyday visible light is easily blocked by human eyelids, near-infrared light possesses the unique physical ability to effortlessly penetrate biological tissues that are rich in water, like our eyelids and corneas.

Because the contact lenses are transparent, a person wearing them with their eyes open will see normal visible light and the newly converted infrared light at the exact same time. This causes the visible light to wash out the weak infrared signals, creating a lot of visual interference.

However, when the wearer closes their eyes, the eyelids act as a natural filter. The eyelids block out all the distracting normal light, but the invisible near-infrared light passes directly through the skin to the lenses resting on the eyes. As a result, the image generation is not disturbed, and the person can easily perceive the flashing infrared signals in the dark.

The second catch is that the images produced by these lenses are currently quite blurry. Because the contact lenses sit directly on the surface of the eye, very close to the retina, the nanoparticles end up scattering the converted visible light. This means the wearer only gets a coarse image or a general sense of where the light is coming from.

To achieve fine, high-resolution details, the scientists actually had to design a supplementary pair of eyeglasses to wear over the contacts to help focus the scattered light. Furthermore, unlike the bulky night vision goggles used by the military, which actively amplify very weak light signals, these contact lenses act as passive sensors. They currently only work if there is a relatively strong infrared light source, like an LED, shining in the area.

So, while we might not be throwing away traditional night vision goggles just yet, this technology is a significant step forward for science.
