Dry eye programme

A one-year treatment programme for chronic dry eye: diagnostics, a Rexon-Eye course, cleaning of blocked glands and support for a whole year. Dry eye does not go away after one treatment; it needs a plan.

349 € a year · 4 visits · Tallinn only

Who the programme is for

  • Screen work, contact lenses, menopause or the period after a laser procedure: stinging, tiredness, vision that fluctuates towards the end of the day.
  • Drops help for a moment and the problem comes back. That is a sign the cause is in the glands, not in the amount of tears.
  • An earlier Rexon-Eye course helped but the effect wore off. The programme keeps the result for a year.
  • The programme is at the Tallinn clinic only.

How the year works

Most dry eye is not caused by too few tears but by the tear film evaporating too fast: the meibomian glands along the lid margins, which produce the film's oily layer, are blocked or working weakly. Drops do not fix that. The programme deals with the cause: the glands are started up and cleaned, and the result is kept up over the year.

The first visit is diagnostics with an optometrist. Sirius meibography shows the glands on an infrared image; the tear film break-up measurement and the OSDI questionnaire give the starting point. You receive a written report and a treatment plan, and if treatment is indicated, the first Rexon-Eye session is done at the same visit.

Rexon-Eye is a contact-free, painless treatment that stimulates the glands with a weak electric field; the course is four sessions, one a week. After the second session, when the glands are warm and the secretion softer, the optometrist cleans the glands: the lid is numbed with a drop and the blocked glands are emptied gently with a dedicated forceps. This is the most effective part of the treatment, especially together with Rexon-Eye, and it is included in the programme.

At the end of the course we compare the meibography with the start, so the result is on an image, not a feeling. For the rest of the year: a digital treatment guide, digital prescriptions when the doctor indicates them, and the support line if anything changes.

If anything is still unclear...

No. A session lasts about 20 minutes, the electrodes are soft and worn like glasses. Most people describe the feeling as warmth and relaxation.

The lid is numbed with a drop and the glands are emptied gently. It feels more like pressure than pain. The eye may be slightly irritated for a couple of hours afterwards; that passes by itself.

Glands that have worked poorly for a long time need repeated stimulation to start up again, and secretion that has hardened inside them does not come out at once. Four sessions a week apart, with the cleaning in the middle of the course, is what gives the result.

Yes, once at least 3 months have passed since the procedure. Dryness after a laser procedure is one of the most common reasons people come to the programme, and supporting the glands helps then too.

For now only in Tallinn, where the Rexon-Eye device and Sirius meibography are.

Part of every programme payment accrues to your KSA account as credit. It can be used for eye drops, punctal plugs, a warming mask or extra Rexon-Eye sessions at KSA. The credit is valid for five years from the last payment and is not transferable.
